What is Brain Fog?

Brain fog is not currently a medically recognized term.  It is a saying that is used to describe what people may experience.  There are brain fog remedies for the following symptoms:

  • Confusion
  • Poor Memory
  • Anxiety
  • Lack of Focus
  • Inability to think clearly and
  • Forgetfulness.

With brain fog, people say they just can’t think because they have a “cloudy head”.  Having a mental illness, you may have experienced this type of feeling before.  Let’s look at some probable causes.

Causes of Brain Fog

  1. Lack of Sleep

Mental and general health literature encourage patients to get plenty of rest. Not getting enough shut eye, could contribute to a brief sensation of brain fog.  This could affect how you make decisions throughout your day.

  1. Drugs that cause Memory Loss

If you pay attention to the side effects of the medicine(s) that you take, you might see memory loss in the list.  That particular prescription may cause brain fog while taking the medication.

  1. Substance Abuse

It is not a secret that substance abuse often plagues the mentally ill.  Participating in such activities could make you susceptible to brain fog.

  1. Depression

Depression can cloud your brain and make it difficult to think or express ideas.  This could lead to having brain fog.

Brain Fog Remedies

  1.  Get Plenty of Sleep

It is important for your brain to get sleep.  Memory, creativity, judgment and attention are all impaired.  You are unable to remember what you learned the previous day.

  1.  Reduce Stress

In our society, people often brag about their stressful lives as if stress was a good thing.  Stress is not good for your brain or the rest of your body.  It can literally cause your brain to shrink.  Needless to say, stress is not beneficial to people with mental illnesses.  A good way to reduce stress is through exercising and eating a balanced diet.

  1. Establish or Reestablish Goals

During my last brain fog episode, I could not think at all.  My mind was all over the place and I could not finish a thought.  I grappled with how I could make it through this thick brain fog.  During my quiet time with God, He helped me to establish some goals and reestablish others.  This simple task brought my thoughts into better focus and my brain began to clear.  An example of a goal could be to brush your teeth in the morning.  That is huge for someone who can barely make it out of bed in the first place.

  1. Avoid Alcohol and Drugs

Alcohol affects judgment and motor skills.  Eventually, drinking alcohol will affect the brain making it difficult to maintain optimal focus.  The substances you are abusing along with the medication you are taking can have devastating affects on the brain.

Brain Fog Remedies vs. Brain Fog

This is not an exhausted list of brain fog remedies.  This is an easy place to start.  Be sure to talk with your psychiatrist if you are experiencing brain fog.  The doctor may need to adjust your medicine or help you make some life changes.  The psychiatrist may also have some brain fog remedies of their own.
