Princess Diana Struggled over Anxiety and Bulimia

Princess Diana

Princess Diana and Mental Disorders

It was recorded on tape by Princess Diana how Prince Charles described her as a “bit chubby” in the period of time leading up to their marriage, according to a source.  The comments set off a torrent of emotions inside of her.  She began to mainly battle against bulimia and anxiety, as published by the Daily Mail from a transcription of tapes.

Sometimes we think certain people are immune from the same ills that befall us ordinary people.  Actors, musicians, politicians or in this case royalty are no different from me and you.

A Blissful Marriage – Not So Much

Her fight began with the disorders a handful of days after the Prince of Wales proposed in February 1981.  In the recordings, Princess Diana explains how the feeling of being sick was cathartic.  The time between their engagements, to their wedding, she “shrunk to nothing”.

She “remembers the first time I made myself sick.  I was so thrilled because I thought this was the release of tension.  The first time I was measured for my wedding dress, I was 29 inches around the waist.  The day I got married, I was 23-and-a-half inches.  I had shrunk into nothing from February to July.

All that Glitters isn’t always Gold

On this latest recording, we hear then 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer describing her feelings of isolation and intimidation as a royal in waiting.

The late Princess Diana asserted the bulimia started the week after her and Prince Charles got engaged.  He put his hand on her waistline and told her “Oh, a bit chubby here, aren’t we?”

Mums the Word

Diana did not discuss these issues until 1991 when her marriage to Charles began to crumble.  Go twenty years in time, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry have been more open about their personal experiences with mental health.  Harry opened up at Heads Together Campaign how he sought out counseling to deal with his grief.  It has taken almost 20 years for William to be able to speak about his mother openly and honestly.

I would love for you to leave a comment about Princess Diana, the Duke of Cambridge or the rest of his family, Prince Harry’s openness about his depression, Lady Di’s struggles, etc. below or to email me.  I remember the beautiful Princess Diana when I was older.  I was in college when she died.  A very bright light went out that night.
